There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which casino gaming is against the law. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling dens is in a prime spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 largest betting centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and guests from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The phenomenal income gained from the casinos ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a number of restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is assumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are vague. The borders are officially open from 9:00 a.m. to 17:00, and despite the fact visas are allegedly needed to pass, there are means around this, as is real of many borders.
The 1st Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in the late nineties, leaving only one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge casino, features 150 slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga river boat is open 24 hours with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon opened. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and 5 table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four one armed bandits and 68 tables at the Holiday Palace. The latest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machine games and 70 tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and ninety six table games, including 87 baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the common gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel building that features a number of comforts on top of the gambling den, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of 130 one armed bandits and 88 gaming tables.
