There is an appealing story to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the dividing line from neighboring Thailand, where casino gambling is not allowed. Eight gambling halls are established in a relatively small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This conclave of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect spot, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gaming centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a couple of Westerners. The astonishing capital gained from the casinos ranges from seven and a half million dollars to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a number of controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, investment sources are ambiguous. The borders are ceremoniously open from 9:00 a.m. to 1700, and although visas are for all intents and purposes necessary to pass, there are ways around this, as is real of many borders.
The first Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored barge gambling den, features one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The original casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown quickly followed. A total of one hundred and fifty slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slots and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat banque (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the 8 casinos in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of a multinational vacation and hotel building that features numerous conveniences in addition to the gambling hall, which offers 10,000 square feet of 130 slot machines and eighty eight table games.
