There is a fascinating background to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the border from next door Thailand, where gambling den gaming is not legal. Eight casinos are based in a generally small area in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia gambling halls is in a prime location, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling dens do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The astonishing income acquired from the casinos ranges from 7.5 million dollars to over twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is presumed to be largely Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 1700, and even though visas are allegedly necessary to cross, there are ways around this, as is accurate of many border crossings.

The initial Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in 1994, but were required to close in the late nineties, leaving only one gambling den in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling hall, contains 150 slots and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den is open 24 hours with forty two tables of mini-baccarat, 4 tables of 21, 10 of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The original gambling hall in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, opened in 1999 and the Golden Crown before long opened. A total of 150 slot machines and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slots and seventy table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machine games and ninety six gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most beloved game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five one armed bandits and 66 of the common table games, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. An additional of the eight gambling halls in Poipet, again a part of a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machine games and 97 table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an all-inclusive vacation and hotel building that contains a number of luxuries on top of the gambling den, which provides ten thousand square feet of 130 slot machine games and 88 tables.
